Change making means to make a difference in my community with the skills I have acquired through my nursing career. When I think of change making, I envision someone selflessly advocating to those underserved populations in need of a helping hand. Change making is the ability to make a difference with using available resources and skills to help desperate populations.

My nursing career has enabled me to be exposed to underserved population. Which I have been blessed to be able to volunteer my time to at several community service events such as Good Friday to Miami Rescue Mission where we provided Diabetic screenings and fed the homeless populations with the goal of helping end hunger, achieve food security and improve overall nutrition and health. Another event that I have served in was the annual foot wash with First United Methodist Church where we provided homeless people with free shoes and socks and educated them on health screenings and proper footwear to prevent infections and skin breakdown. Furthermore, most recently I attended an immersion trip in Immokalee, Florida to serve the Haitian and Hispanic population with emphasis on providing extensive education on Breast Cancer, Hypertension, Diabetes, and preventative measures and health screenings to increase overall health awareness.

The obstacles currently affecting my changemaking work are the following; lack of funding for health resources, supplies, medications. Along with these recourses what is most importantly missing is the manpower from first responders, nurses and doctors to assist in the cause of making a change, as well as the lack of compliance and knowledge from unserved population.

To be a change maker it is important to be empathetic, opened minded, use all available resources, be creative on how you create the knowledge to the communities you are working with, be brave and fearless in the obstacles you will be facing to make these changes.

My advice to students who have a calling to engage in changemaking work is the following; Don't ever get discouraged, always follow your intuition and passion despite any obstacles. Do not be afraid to ask for help and support; you will be surprised by how many individuals that are in the same frequency of positivity who are willing to assist.
